Epoxy zinc rich
primer coating
is belongs to zinc coatings which are applied to protect ferrous surfaces from
corrosion. So the zinc based primer coating provides cathodic protection for
the steel surfaces. Because zinc
is anodic to steel, these particles corrode first, thus protecting
the ferrous substrate beneath the primer from corrosion. Being a trustworthy
enterprise, Protexion presenting a
comprehensive assortment of epoxy
zinc rich primer coating. Our offered product is highly demanded for the
purposes of coating oil tankers.
Zinc rich
primer coatings are designed for application on blast cleaned steel. This Epoxy Zinc Rich
Primer coating is
compatible with every type of coating and is most commonly used as a
prefabrication primer. It can be used even without overcoating to protect the
inside of cargo tanks in oil – tankers and ships.
What is Epoxy Zinc Rich Primer?
Epoxy Zinc
Rich Primer is a two-pack process enriched with metallic zinc to provide
superb efficiency in highly corrosive environment. Metallic zinc provides
cathode protection for base metal groups and Epoxide reacts with polyamide /
amine adduct hardener to form hard, non-convertible film at ambient
temperatures. It resists photo degradation by UV light as it contains UV
absorber.
The
zinc particles are more active than steel and act as anodes in the coating that
corrode sacrificially instead of the steel when they are exposed to water,
oxygen, and/or chlorides. Epoxy Zinc rich
primer coatings are
primarily used to protect steel structures from corrosion; and organic zinc-rich primers are often
preferred over inorganic zinc-rich
primers because they are less sensitive to surface preparation, over
application, and humidity, making it easier to apply.
Safety Precautions to Take When Applying Epoxy Zinc
Rich Coating:
·
Do not inhale solvent vapour or paint mist with face mask. Use
goggles and gloves to protect against direct skin and eye contact with paint.
·
Clean with fresh running water in case of pollution and seek
urgent medical assistance.
·
Keep the material away from fire, lightning and direct flames
·
Provide sufficient ventilation while working with solvent based
paints in confined spaces and stagnant air.
Protection Mechanism of Epoxy Zinc Rich Primer
Coating
Initially,
once the epoxy zinc rich primer coating
and the top coating are applied on the substrate as a continuous layer, the
coating system acts as a barrier to corrosive environments. The
coating fully isolates the substrate from the environment.
Only
after a defect is formed in the coating, thus partially exposing the substrate
to the corrosive environment, does the
zinc rich primer layer play its part in providing sacrificial corrosion protection to delay the onset
of the electrochemical reaction (corrosion) of the substrate.
The
amount of sacrificial protection provided depends upon variables such as the
purity of the zinc dust used, the presence of moisture, and the
electrical conductivity between the substrate and interconnected zinc
particles. Thus, the zinc used in the primer is anodic to the ferrous substrate
that acts as a cathode. Once the zinc particles are converted into zinc
oxide, the sacrificial protection will end.
